Posted: Sat Jun 20, 2015 8:15 Post subject: Is this the Power Steering Reservoir? |
|
|
Whilst checking my oil I noticed a reservoir on the passenger side beside the battery (larger than the brake and clutch reservoirs) that is virtually on the Min line. It says something like ATF exxon on the lid.
I've tried to find it in the manual but no luck, is this the power steering fluid and if so, can I top it up with Dot brake/clutch fluid or is it something else
Cab someone please advise.
Thank you. |

That is, from your description, indeed the power steering reservoir.....You need to use the correct fluid, Dexron III ATF, not brake fluid. _________________ Khotso........... |

It is the power steering fluid and you can top it up with dexron II or III automatic transmission fluid NOT brake fluid |

I've topped it up now, but I noticed a wet patch has appeared overnight, underneath the motor just in a bit from the o/s front wheel and it looks like it might be fluid, definitely not diesel, oil, or water.
It seems to have dripped from a bit with a large nut on the bottom that is bolted onto the chassis and has part of the steering attached to it. Could it be a pipe or something above that where it is leaking from.
Please be kind, it should be pretty obvious I know nothing about Isuzus except that I love it. I am just a poor old pensioner who has wanted one of these for years and have now only just managed to get an old but good? one. Just like me. |

If your leak is coming from above it could be from the seal at the top of the steering box where the column fits on can be seen from the top with bonnet raised it could be one of the steel pipes going into the top of the steering box but not so likely if it proves to be the seal then it should be replaced Some people have used stop leak products that are available from auto shops not a fan myself always think itis better to fit a new seal |

Are the seal kits still available?
Going back a couple of years, there used to be a place in Halifax that used to sell refurbed steering boxes on an exchange basis. Not cheap, but hell of a lot cheaper than a replacement box (if you can still get them). |

I think I have a bigger problem than I thought. I went out this morning and found that the reservoir has virtually emptied overnight, after topping it up yesterday.
I checked the top of the steering box as suggested but it seems totally dry all over, however, when I looked underneath, the fluid seems to be running down from inside the bit with the big nut on the bottom, (as described in my earlier post).
I've taken a good photo of it but don't know how to include it here? any suggestions please. Thanks. |

don't panic mate I just had same prob with mine. there are a few places on eebuygum that do recon units at around £200, but your best bet might be a good second hand unit.
Dan on here is not far from you at pocklington yorks , he as steering boxes at around £75 if I remember rightly.
its a big job , but I did mine with the help of gribble/rhanagar and other forum members and if I can do it then anyone can _________________ 93 SWB 3.1Turbo Duty intercooler
