|
|
I had the glow plugs out in my 1995 3.1 diesel Bighorn today, they all seemed to test OK but I did do a voltage check on the system as my sone turned the key on to bring up the glow plug dash light. It showed 11-12 volts for a few seconds & then when he called light off, dropped back to zero. As I understand it, it should drop back to a lesser voltage (7v?) for several minutes but in my case nothing. I'm guessing this is a relay controlled thing, so, do I have a duff relay or a duff switch that should be switching in a second relay or.... am I talking through a hole in my head????

There are several bits to the QOS system and the afterglow is done through the big silver thing (resistor ) up by the headlight and another relay and the QOS controller .
Have a read of the manual too as its got a good fault finding tree.

Hopefully not a new record for time taken to get back to acknowledge help, thanks for this. Its taken a while to get around to doing much due to an insanely busy time of late but I did eventually buy a half decent digital multimeter, pull the glow plugs again & try them which revealed some unhappiness so I treated it to a set of new ones. This plus revisiting my timing belt change of a couple of months ago showed I had a very slight misalignment of the crank mark when the cam & pump pulleys were locked, about a 1/4 tooth I guess which showed in a slight lack of tension between the cam & crank pulleys. I took that out & re-tensioned the whole thing & its over all happier, though I didn't at any point feel it was running less well than before & whether or not that had any effect on my starting, who would know but possibly. I've also found my manual pdf & printed out the section you've shown above so will try to ID & check the after glow resister, when I find it, all I could see behind the right head light was a couple of connectors (1995 Japanese market Bighorn 3.1 turbo auto) More investigation needed here. I'm guessing its Ok though by the way it has started on some very frosty morning lately.
Thanks again.

Dropping resistor/timer:

There are two relays just behind the engine bay fuse box in a small black box one is pre heat and one after glow and the afterglow timer/dropping resistor is the silver box below the o/s headlight. |

Right, thanks for that, it makes it all a bit a lot clearer, Not where I was looking at all. I'll check all that out.
