I have a 2000 Trooper with a 3.5 L Petrol engine. There is a noise coming from the engine that sounds like a fan blade hitting something. The interval of the 'hits' increases as I press on the accelerator until the noise stops completely. My mechanic points out that the oil pressure remaines low when the engine makes the hitting noise, and increases when the noise stops. He argues that this means the oil pump needs to be replaced.

I have little experience and am not inclined to trust the mechanic especially.

Does anyone have advice for me?

Further, if the pump has to be replaced, how much should it cost?

I very much appreciate any comments.
Thanks
