Thanks Eithan, sadly the pc is in a worse state than the car and my phone doesn't give the option to ask to join closed groups  Crying or Very sad . Rhanagar - thanks, will do.

Before I book in for diagnostics - will plugging into a tech 2 say which injector is out or just that an injector is out? Do I need to ask for other tests? Sorry for asking stupid questions but I've never had to deal with plugging a car into a computer before! Always had well behaved cars in the past.

Thanks.

It will tell you what injector is out by doing a click test

Booked in to be 'tech'd' on Monday. In the mean time, another stupid question!

I am grounded and have no real option but to drive it. I have read horror stories about these engines wrecking themselves with an injector out. I have no diesel in coolant or oil - am I safe to drive it conservatively the 20miles and back to work?

Thanks

The engine blowing up is when the diesel leaks badly past the seals in the common rail into the sump leading to fun, games, and shenannigans. What you have is an injector internally not firing right. So I would say your safe from that situation.

As for running it, I don't know enough to make that call.

Right, back from the garage and, despite having a tech 2 and reassuring me that they would be able to read it, they haven't. The scanner recognises that it's plugged in but does not communicate with the ecu. They didn't charge me so I guess that's good.

Can I just do it the old fashioned way, expose the tops of the injectors, start the engine and listen to the clicking? Or am I being too simplistic?! Any other suggestions?

Rhanagar, sent you a friend request on Facebook so you can add me to the Facebook group.

Thanks.

Yes just pull the plug off each one in turn but watch out it can get messy!

Ok, before I take my engine apart today just a question about something that's been playing on my mind since taking the throttle body off last week. It was slightly carbonized but not filthy and there was a small amount of oil coating it but all the pipes in and out were fairly clean so nothing concerning.

What flummoxed me was that there was oil in the plug to, what I am assuming is, the control unit for the valve inside. It's the larger of the 2 plugs that you remove to take the throttle body off. This appears to be fixed to a sealed unit so I am concerned that there should be no oil coming out of it! I could understand it if it was the wiring loom for the injectors but not here! There are no signs of oil anywhere else around the throttle body.

If this has failed in some way would this explain my shake, rattle and roll? It's worst when cold and improves as it gets hotter. Once hot, the shake is barely noticeable at idle.

Thanks.

Forget the last post, took the actuator apart, all fine. Did the white (yellow) wire trick and worse, if anything. Obviously been done before on this engine as convenient connector there to pull apart rather than cutting the wire.

So, now delving into the guts to get to the injectors and got as far as taking plastic cover and sound proofing off. Assuming I need to undo large thing with pipe coming out of it before I can take cover off? Not sure how to attach a pic, sorry but as you're all pros I'm sure you know what I'm on about?!

Thanks

Finally got everything off and id'd the faulty injector - hurrah. Now trying to find the right grade injector as my ecu seems to not want to talk to any tech 2's!

More questions - how do I depressurise the fuel system?
- I need to drain the coolant, remove the oil rail (4 bolts and the oil pipe that I reconnected after removing the cover?) then pop out the injector?

Reverse to replace and replace the copper gasket?

Have I missed anything? Sorry for asking stupid questions, I have read all the other posts on this matter and looked at the 'manual' but just checking.

Thanks

the fuel system is depressurised when you switch off so no worries there, if your just changing the injector then you don't need to drain the coolant and if it's just one then don't disturb the others just change that one and new seals  for that injector don't reuse any of the old ones

Thanks for that.

When you say seals I thought there was the copper gasket on the bottom and the other seals were on the sleeve which I don't have the tool to pull (seems a rarity anyway). What are the seals I need to change?

Thanks
