I have seen some queries about exhaust emissions whilst browsing the site and have found some interesting information on the Web.
Black smoke. Mainly oil and unburnt fuel, indicating poorly serviced or tuned engine.
Blue smoke. Soot, oil and unburnt fuel, indicates a mechanical fault.
White smoke. Water droplets and unburnt fuel produced when starting from cold and dissapears when engine warms up.

More good information at. www.diesel-engine.org and follow the troubleshooting link.

Hope this is of use.
