|
|
I've got a 2004 3.0 with the 4jx1 which wont start.
The other day I went out to start it, it started as normal, ran ok for 30 seconds started to misfire then cut out. Since then it wont start at all.
I've got a tech 2 and compared all the values to the sticky on the general forum.
All values are good, injector status turns to enabled. But it wont start.
I've primed the diesel using the primer and it comes out the bleed screw.
What can I check next? |

Hi Eithan,
I've seen it fluctuate between 5.0 and 8.0, it goes up and down a bit as it cranks.
The manifold pressure tends to go from 98 to 99..
Thank you for your input |

can you do a click test on the injectors? also can you smell diesel in the radiator? |

Just to note also I took the readings with a another vehicle providing extra power via jump leads, as the battery's don't last long. So it was turning over pretty quickly, think I saw the rpm at 250. |

if the above tests are ok then you need to run it from a different fuel supply to rule out air in the fuel line |

There is definitely diesel mixing with coolant but not with the oil. I had a burst hose just under the turbo to confirm that problem.
I can do a click test, but I'll need to get a helper, as I can't hear anything with the wind. Its outside at the moment. |

I've tried an external supply of fuel. But it made no effort at all with this method.
Basically a bottle with a clear hose connected to fuel filter, then pumped tell clear diesel came through bleed screw. Had a helper pumping the primer also while I was cranking it. |

if you got diesel in the rad then you need to get that problem sorted first which is most likely sleeve seals, if your mixing it in the rad then coolant/water will most likely be getting in to the fuel supply as well. |

That was actually the next job I was to do on it, I have the copper washers and seals already.
I'm just curious why it wont start. I guess I'm most afraid of cracked head.
If I drained all the coolant, and used an external supply would it run then for a few seconds. To confirm that everything else is ok? |

may do if you ran it to the pump and bypassed the filter housing but it depends on how bad the seals are really |

I changed the all the seals and copper washers on the injectors and sleeves.
I've got an external fuel supply connected to the pipe that takes the feed from the fuel filter.
The tech 2 reports that the injectors are enabled, rail pressure looks good.
Its almost starting but just not catching on. At least firing on one or two of the cylinders.
Is it possible that the oil is diluted or something like that. Whats my best option at this point? |

The oil pressure reaches around 6.1, starts at 0 and builds up slowly, have seen it up at 9 also momentarily.
Engine rpm ranges between 250 and 300.
I changed around my external fuel supply it now gravity feeds into the fuel filter, I emptied it first. I can now pump it through with the hand primer.
It did run today for about 10 seconds on two cylinders.
The starter is taking a fair bit of torture.
At this point I'd nearly ship it over to old mill motors, just for the sheer curiosity of finding out what is actually wrong with it.
Thanks for any ideas, suggestions... |
