I have a 2003 3.0D DOHC (4JX1) and the steering box is leaking on the bottom seal.

1. Which makes more sense - Change seal or fit new/reconditioned box?
2. If replacing the seal can this be done in situ?
3. If I need replacement box where can I buy one?

It would be far easier to replace with a new one. You can get seal kits but you have to remove it to fit them and tbh fitting a good second hand one is easier and worth avoiding the hassle.

Dan @ Independent Isuzu will probably have something suitable. They are common on all Troopers and Bighorns. The only difference is wether LHD or RHD

P.S. if you go second hand get one with the pitman arm on it. They are a pain to remove from the old box to put on brand new boxes.

Thanks for the reply.

My concern with secondhand is I wouldn't know how 'good' it is and how long the seal will last. Mine is a low mileage car (with original box) so I suppose it is a good chance that the box itself is ok, is changing the seals a real *beep* of a job?

Yup .. Monterey is the same.

The problem is that lower pitman arm. It has to come off if you replace with new or replace the seals. It is a royal pain in the arris and I know people to get through a variety of pullers and splitters removing it.

If nothing else you have the old one to recondition at your leisure in case this one goes the same way.

£60 isn't bad .. even if it lasts a couple of years.

That's what I was thinking.

Got everything loose/removed except joint on the end of the pitman arm. Looks like a joint splitter would damage the rubber boot, I shall try a large hammer first but if I have to resort to a splitter and I do damage the boot are the boots replaceable or would it be a new joint?

Milner Off road sell new control arms.

http://www.milneroffroad.com/isuzu/trooper/ubs73-3-0td-1998-2004-end-uk/ubs73-steering/ubs73-steering-relay-centre-rod-rhd

Though I have found that one of these

http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/laser-ball-joint-separator-scissors

and hitting the end of the pitman arm usually pops them off.

A few miles south of Norwich.

Had taken the pinch bolt out of steering shaft splines last night but having a problem removing it now. Am I right in thinking that with the box still bolted to the chassis the steering shaft should slide up clear of the box (once free from its splines)? I'm guessing it has a sliding section built in.

Yup .. it should slide up towards the bulkhead. There is a join halfway along. I am moving that way in the next couple of weekends, but will be about Sunday. If you are stuck I can pop over and lend a hand.
