hi there,
i need advice please.
if im out somewhere very remote with the truck & req help ie ive rolled it or broken my arm, id like to transmit on the emergency broadcast freq to alert help.
now is that different from cb?
do i need a vhf transmitter radio or just an emergency beacon.
im sorry if these are inane questions im just so confused by all the different types of transmitters

Not sure what you've been reading but if you're out somewhere very remote in the UK, as an ordinary member of the public (i.e. not a radio ham or using a commercial rig), you basically have the options of mobile phone or CB! Or arguably PMR446. The CB 'Emergency' channel is a bit of a joke quite frankly; better than nothing but don't rely on it being monitored in any given area!
I suspect what you're referring to is a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) - These are really aimed at walkers and are basically the same as are carried on boats; from January 2012 it became legal to use them on land. When activated it transmits a message which includes a code uniquely identifying the individual who registered the device on purchase. This information is held in a global database, UK data being managed by the UK Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) Registry.
The official guidance is that the normal emergency response procedures (ie in the UK, dial 999 and ask for the Police) should be used first. A PLB should be activated only when there is no realistic alternative means of rescue and the situation is serious. - Activating one is as serious as putting up a flare.
As far as I'm aware there is NO "emergency broadcast freq" in the UK except for maratime use... |

SO, we've got the UK sorted what would you recommend in say Europe or Russia.
Maybe ive got this ridiculous idea that you can transmit on say the aviation emergency frequency to attract the attention of the emergency services.
Would it be more practical to carry a sat phone?
This would be my longest trip and solo. Solitude is not a problem just the consequences of an accident with the truck.

What I'd recommend is hooking up with others who are involved in the expedition/overlanding scene and drawing on their overall experience of prepping for such a trip... There will be no 'one size fits all' answers; and the issue of comms is just one aspect of an overall-complex (nd fairly serious) subject.
Short answer is that transmitting on an unauthorised frequency is not only likely to be unreliable; but in some circumstances even possession of the equipment to do so might be enough to land you in serious serious bother. Couldn't say if a sat-phone is your answer; but what I will say is that the correct approach is unlilkely to be found in the half-baked notion that you can mis-use some unrelated service to achieve safety. 'Boy's Own'stuff... Not reality! |
