Back to the job in hand. [Never thought it would take this long ... am definitely 'loosing the will to live']
Neighbour (Discovery owner ...) came round because we had found a PDF describing the workings of the immobiliser.
Armed with Tech2 we decided to reset the immobiliser (as nothing else had worked so far).
[Expected to reset it and the re-program keyfob in order to try a start.]
Armed with VIN - plus Security Code and Key number we tried.
Tech2 insisted we were working on a petrol engine and would not give an option to change to Diesel !!!
Then it stated that in order to reprogram the immobiliser we HAD to link to TIS !!
At that point we gave up for the day.
PS - We have managed to clear the immobiliser ECU memory and ignition key - so we are even further from starting. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

it normally warns you the vehicle won't start before you reset the immobiliser |

It did ... but there were other unresolved major 'problems' ...
that caused us to "give up" - defeated and puzzled.
We were in the "Body" section trying to reset the immobiliser first.
Why did it think my 4JX1 was a "gasoline engine" ? We had never 'told' Tech2 what fuel the Trooper used.
It only gave the two petrol-engined options - no diesel ... [bearing in mind it has its original 4JX1 ECU, immobiliser ECU and key/transponder ]
Why did we not get any option to choose diesel?
When finally [slightly unexpectedly ...] a screen came up suggesting "Diesel" - and we clicked on it to Confirm [ ... thinking we were getting somewhere]
did Tech2 come back with "Reset failed" ?
Perhaps the answer is the Chinese Tech2 clone is unreliable after all ? _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

Very kind of you to offer - I'll have to think about it only because I'm quite along way away!
[WE - the royal WE - obviously thought wrongly that given all the security data/key and VIN number we could use Tech2 to "Reset the immobiliser" and then reprogram the key] But a reset is not possible without TIS. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

Blast ! Wanted to edit my typo "along" to "a long" - but the Edit facility has disappeared again.
Didn't even appear briefly.
Just for reference - on a Honda Goldwing forum I have joined the "Edit facility" is permanent not fleeting or non-existant. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

its because theres options on what your coding i.e brand new blank ecu or update the original ecu or immobiliser and ecu hence the tech2 has to gain security clearance from tis and act as a pass through unless the card is big enough to hold the data from tis to reprogram it |

Totally stripped the ORCV and cleaned each part with brake/clutch cleaner then reassembled.
I'll have to find a means of accurately checking actual cranking speed. Now - somewhere I've got an ex-aircraft industry Smiths tachometer - the type you have to contact the crank pulley with - not electronic.
Hah. It was amongst the 'treasures' in my computer desk drawer all the time ... it reads 0-200 but has three sets of internal gearing you can select to indicate
200 rpm max or 2000 rpm or even 20,000rpom. It is complete with a rubber pointer and a rubber cone for end-on usage AND a 2" diameter rubber disc for use at right angles.
Clearly where you run the disc on the face of a pulley affects the reading so I'll have to think about that ...
I've cranked long enough yesterday and today to probably finish filling and bleeding the oil rail.
Might have to devise an attachment for an oil-gauge to check. Any suitable take-off points?
Is there any means of checking cam sensors?
Does the ECU need a minimum voltage at certain pins?
Would it ALL become clear if I found someone to attach tech2 whilst cranking - if it won't start.] |
thank you for link |

IT RUNS - at long last!!!
Finally gave up after wiping Immobiliser ECU and finding the TIS with the clone Tech2 would only recognise North American VIN formats ...
So ... Had it shipped down to eithan at Old Mill Motors.
Eithan found the replaced 'good' flywheel sensor was actually intermittent and therefore duff ...
Fitted a new one and it started.
On road test it put on the EML and he discovered alternator was chucking 16v out !
I have sent down an ultra-low mileage [500 miles] 90amp alternator - so fingers crossed.
Eithan is definitely a star in my books. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

No response to my comments or post about the 'Edit facility ' having disappeared.
Collected the now-running Trooper from wizard eithan at Old Mill Motors yesterday.
First ever drive was the drive home.
Goes well BUT I was slightly surprised that the clutch engages so very high up on the travel.
It is a new Excedy 3-part clutch. Not sure if this is normal? as I've not driven another one before[/u] _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper
