1994 Trooper Citation 3.1 td fitted with automatic freewheel hub.
could the hubs be changed to manual freewheel hubs,so when maneuvering caravan / trailer on tarmac / hard surface I can leave hubs unlocked and use low ratio without 4 wheel being drive engaged ,hubs free and not get transmission windup

I changed the auto hubs on my MK 1 for the manual ones sold by milners as the auto ones were slipping and they're great. Took about 15 minutes a side to do, dead easy.

No problem at all in fitting them & plenty of different makes. If you have a friend in the USA who will post them to you, get some Superwinch 400533. Currently $85.75 is the best price, I ordered 2nd set today!

Jonkem, which USA company did you use? I'm struggling to find a company who are happy to ship to UK. Also, how long did they take to be delivered? And did you have to pay any extra tax?

Thanks for your help.

I bought my superwinchs long time ago from Independent4x. No probs with them. Shipping cost was very cheap too, don´t remember how much, but was very cheap.

http://www.independent4x.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=839915%7C938630&PRID=950062

Also bought a set of teralows from them. They have a very fast and secure service.
Cheers

Does it matter which size I get, and do I need to order this circlip from the same place as the superwinch hubs?

I've read a lot of articles which suggest that running in 4wd with the hubs unlocked is a bad idea. Does anyone know if this is true or not?

Chris.

From what I have read, that is correct, but I will only use 4wd if in snow or when off-roading, so the hubs will be locked at the same time. When in 2wd the hubs will be unlocked.

Jimmie... I use www.sumitracing.com but I'm lucky to have a friend in Chicago who can forward them to me cheaply. It is free shipping within the USA! I've spoken to Sunmmit on the phone & they were happy to post to the UK, it's just cheaper for me to get them forwarded.

The circlip is available from 99% of motor factors, just measure the groove accurately with a vernier, but if you get stuck I can send you a couple of the right size.

As for using 4L with hubs unlocked...it's not recommended by anyone but I have done it for manouvering with no problems at all. This question is more pertinent with locked diffs rather than open ones.
