Just had the Trooper back from Old Mill Motors.

Drives quite well - BUT Eithan found the original alternator appeared to be overcharging - so I sent down a ultra-low mileage virtualy-new spare that I had.

Eithan fitted that but it still seems to be overcharging ...
My multi-meter shows 12.7V at battery before starting, started it and the charge leapt to 13.6V but then climbed steadily till showing 15.0V.

Any ideas ?

Thanks eithan.

I did find a reference on the net saying 15.0V was the absolute top limit for 12 Volt systems.

I would still rather get it down so will look at getting a new regulator for my 'old' alternator.

Keep your headlights on all the time...
Not the answer to your problems but I had similar issues with my motorbike, Kawasaki 1000, was putting 17V into the battery! changed the voltage regulator/rectifier as its a seperate unit on bikes, but it still overcharged. I just kept the lights on all the time  Shocked

I must admit I DID have the headlights on all the way back from OMM as the dash dial was still showing around 15V.

I was going to try a new rectifier/regulator in the original alternator but having dismantled it and found long brushes and perfect slip-rings ... I'm wavering.

the brushes and slip rings won't make it overcharge, its the reg/rec that's faulty. I think its soldered and rivetted in place, so its a bit of a cow to change  Shocked

I would suggest fitted a complete used alternator, but I'm having issues with mine, had 2 now that are faulty, thankfully I bought it off Dan at Independent Isuzu who is sending me a third one, 3rd Time Lucky I hope!

I bought a 'new' one off AA Autoparts on eebuygum because it was £110 and they are based in my home town...lasted 1492 miles before the rear bearing seized solid, not new but recon parts, and poor quality.

I've never had problems with used electrical parts before, still think a genuine used part with warranty is better than a cheap recon unit  Very Happy

My reference to the 'decent brushes and slip-rings' was only to indicate why I had reservations about continuing and de-soldering the regulator ... it might yet happen.

I do understand that regulators can malfunction but two in a row have ended up overcharging.

Clearly your 'recon' alternator was ... less than perfect. Good warning.

Good of Dan to make the effort ... ( my 's/h but working' crank sensor from Dan turned out to be duff ... so eithan solved the 'no start' problem with a new sensor)
I couldn't go back to Dan because of the time lapse between supply and diagnosis of "intermittent" but I'm sure he would have responded.

I received #3 this morning, quick response from Dan  Very Happy
I had to replace the connector as my original alty was a 80A (I think) and I swapped it years ago, and just used Lucar connectors. This time I've fitted the correct connector, I'm 100% sure I replaced the 2 wires to the correct connectors...but! Can you tell me which way your wires go? Looking down onto the alty when fitted, there's the 2 wire connector at the back, its oblong with the locking clip at the rear, one wire is white and one is white with blue tracer, can you tell me which way round yours are please?
As you are stood at the front, which is which, using your right hand as the one nearest the kerb side?  Shocked
Hope we both get this issue sorted asap...the snow is coming!

Sorry to keep you waiting!
Just come back in.

The blue plug on the back of my alternator has two wires :-

The slightly thicker one is white with a black stripe and is on the offside.
The slightly thinner one is white with a blue stripe and is on the block or nearside.

The only white wires are the two that go onto the nut under the snapfit grey cover at the back.
[There's also an earth wire from the loom and down to the chassis.]

Those are all standard wires on my 2002 3.0 TD 4JX1 engine.

As detailed in my post about "Unknown code" ...

Turned out to be nothing to do with the regulator - or alternator for that matter.

It was a break/poor connection between the S terminal and the battery positive terminal.

It caused the alternator to turn out maximum available volts (15ish) as a default.

Replacing wire solved the issue.
