Hard to describe ...

Starter makes an unusual noise [almost like a scraping] just before engaging and spinning engine over. Engine starts OK but ...
I'm wondering if there's a fault (present or developing)  with the pre-engagement section of the motor ?

1. Is it common ?

2. If I take the motor off - is it serviceable/fixable ?

Thanks.

Just looked on fleabay ...

there are reasonably priced freewheel/clutch units but is there any way of knowing the relevant starter type to enable
me to order a correct one - BEFORE removing my starter ?

May be a daft question - but I thought I'd ask !

Found a local agent who, if I take the starter in on a Friday, will have it back "fully overhauled"[ new starter clutch etc.] the following Tuesday.

[Been busy getting a new normal clutch fitted to SWMBF's Grand Vitara.] ££££s

Change of Plan.   Bought recon starter complete from ATP Ltd. at Cannock.

DHL couriers were near-useless - thus delivery delayed ...

Fitted new starter with a fair amount of difficulty as on my own and lying underneath outside.

SNAG.    Was desperate to finish fitting [as I had to collect my other half from a stay in Hospital].

Could only get bottom bolt in and tight.

How does eithan - or anyone - fit/reach and tighten the top 17mm bolt and nut on a 4JX1 ???

BTW.   My starter numbers were :-

897323       4370
S14-210A   12V
IZQ            Hitachi
             Made in Japan

One tip if on your own ... the starter is nose heavy so fairly hard to get first bolt in and lined up given limited access.
Eventually I tied a nylon cord to the solenoid bolt for the positive lead - and tied it up with the starter roughly level.
It helped a great deal.

[I removed the oil tube and various pipes to improve access.]
