I'm having issues with my 1993 3.1 Bighorn. The battery sometimes charges but often doesn't.  The alternator appears to be working when tested on a bench but works now and again when back on the vehicle and often results in not starting and I need to jumpstart. I have renewed the battery & the relay, wires look ok as best as we can see, and all belts tight so I'm now questioning my sanity. Anyone suffered the same issues and any suggestions.

Any help appreciated.

Stick a multimeter on the battery when then engines running, with no electrics on.

If your getting just under 14v. That's good, if not that's bad. Flick the lights, radio ect on. Should remain at just under 14v.

If not I'd say your alternator is knackered.

I just replaced the alternator on my 3.1. I also noticed the tensioner was all bent and not doing a great job. Maybe worth checking that.
