Well the 3.1 swap is going ok and I'm so glad I faffed around getting the 3.0 turbo to fit and work.
So the issue now is the alternator. I had to use the one from the 3.1 but it wasn't happy and only charges when it's warm then spits it's dummy when there's any type of load on it. Ok in the summer but a difficult juggling act when you need lights, wipers and the fan.
So I bought another one. Not pattern from Isuzu as I didn't have £400 to spend on it. The rent takes priority. It works for a week or so then didn't. *beep*.
I watched a video of how to test your alternator so I thought I'd look at the old one. The wires from the windings are soldered on and there are only 3 which is different from the video.
I checked the 'new' one and it has 4 wires and they're connected by a threaded screw so I could take it to bits and test it. I'm guessing that the old one has the negative side of the windings connected in a different place but I can't see it and my soldering technique leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't want to throw it away as the bearings, brushes and slip rings are in good order but the new one doesn't work properly.

The car is used daily and while I can change the alternator in a couple of hours ( tea break included ) I don't want to do it again and again.

Any suggestions that don't involve petrol and matches ?
