|
|
Hi all. Just found your forum and did a lot of searching for an answer and thought easier to make a post to those that know.
I bought and 02 Trooper 3.0 manual at start of lockdown, 2 owners low miles 100k and drove live a dream - flew up hills in any gear. Couple of weeks past oil light come on and turbo started belching smoke - lucky only 1/2 mile from home.
Found sump pickup had fallen off and obviously took out the turbo. So I took a chance and a brand new turbo cartridge off eebuygum - Chinese no doubt - fitted it and in was running fine - engine saved - so far.
Took for drive - no guts. Back home noticed for some strange gremlin reason the actuator was not working. Checked it with mitivac and seemed ok but got another one anyway and same thing so fitted boost gauge with an adjustable manual valve in line and set to 15. Starts, drives and runs fine for last few weeks but just no power - especially all the way through 1/2 and to top of 3rd gear. Motorway 90 no problem but no guts as if turbo not boosting - even when the temp outside is really low.
Put an 800kg trailer on yesterday and would not pull worth a damm.
Could it be the cartridge even though no smoke or loss of oil? Could the inline adjuster be telling porkies ie by restricting the line it is not actually affecting the boost at the turbo but only the boost being read by the gauge?
I am no specialist so can anyone of you experienced folks make any educated guess's based on the above info and suggest, if there is one, a proper set up spec for the actuator? |

Some clarification. The boost gauge is taken off the get side. The manual boost controller is straight from the wastegate. Under any load, hills etc the motor will not pull more than 3000rpm. After checking oil this morn it looks like it has used 3/4 of the oil level between full n low marks on dipstick over a distance about 200 miles yet not smoking. |

Disconnected boost adjuster and boost pressure reads at full throttle (standiing not driving) has dropped to 7psi was 15psi. Max revs flat out still 3000 in 1 2 and 3rd gear |

egr system works on a vacuum so it won't show any increase in boost, also the map sensor is nearly maxed out anyway with the standard boost so no point in trying to increase it really. standard readings are about 180 kpa which includes atmospheric pressure and the map is maxed out at 206 kpa inc atmospheric pressure.
how were you checking to see if the actuator was moving? turbos don't boost when the engine is stationary revving it needs to be driving to produce the pressure. if you really wanted to increase the pressure then you would need to restrict the pipe going to the waste gate so the boost takes longer to open the waste gate.
the euro3 engine which you have does have a common issue with the map getting blocked up which means the ecu can't see the pressure and then can't add the extra fuel to make it go so pop the sensor up and check the small hole in the bottom of the sensor isn't blocked with crud from the egr system. |

Thanks for the reply Ethan H.
The boost cotroller was put between the snail and the actuator when this was removed the gauge which showed 15psi at full (3000rpm) throttle when fitted then dropped to 7.5psi and the gauge has been taken off from the egr side.
My son fitted a gopro in the engine bay to check actuator when he was drving it.
The map was cleaned out before the gauge was teed off from there (have to cleanthe one on my 1.9 Astra CDTI every month).
Am I correct in assuming that if the map is blocked the ecu cannot get correct reading and therefore engine is limited by fuel which would in theory stop it reving, in this case, above 3000 at full throttle?
The egr is not blanked off on this one - is it possible to do so/fit a bypass or does the map reply on it? |

im not sure how your getting a boost reading off the egr side as theres no boost pressure that side it's all vacuum pipes? if the map is blocked it won't restrict the revs they drive like a normally aspirated diesel just no turbo kicking in
egr can be bypassed by just pulling the vac pipe off the valve and blocking the pipe off, the valve is in a closed state naturally and requires vacuum to open |

There was a post in the Aussie 4x4 forum detail how to put boost gauge on egr side (sorry should have said it was T'd off the map). Also saw a couple of posts on here about doing the same - or did i read them wrong? Think one was bya redrob or robroy?
Anyways, pulled the gauge off the map and put a T in the snail pipe after the manual adjuster to operate. Will see in next few days how it goes and let you know.
Still havnt figured the oil loss as it does not smoke except for white fuel when cold. |

that was the other confusing thing, you should have a euro3 engine in yours which there are no pipes going to the map sensor as it pushes in to the top of the manifold. are you sure you got the right sensor to check if it was blocked? |

no thats the egr pressure sensor you should be looking on top of the inlet manifold at the back near the bulkhead, it's held in place with a 10mm bolt and just a 3 wire plug going to it |
