So would I!

You could try locking the pully with a socket on the big nut, don't know if this would leave enough room to get at the smaller bolts?

could do, bar across the teeth on the fly wheel ring gear, put in gear, air gun... I've done most before and not had a problem.. but don't know if that's luck or judgement?

When i recently done mine i had it in low range in gear and wheels against the kurb, couple of good heaves on a 2 foot breaker bar and the centre bolt was out (right hand thread) Needed a puller to ease the pully off though. Once its off its only about a 30 minute job to replace the timing belt and then your putting it all back together again!

Cheers

Mark

You only need to take the four bolts off not the center bolt Wink

Hallo again
it look like i didnt explained myself proplerly, hehe is the full story ; Sad
on  my way to work about half way the engine started make a noice - like if you take the saund proof off or if the air filter is loose, basicly I could hear the engine more then before. Got to work checked it over -nothing. Started up normaly just was noisy Shocked , Got home park up and couldnt started up at all the next day. Crying or Very sad
Changed heat plugs, tested injectors, put it all together ( over a week period) used easy start to started- went ok for 5 minutes and died again. Evil or Very Mad
Didnt started it at all after that, tow it to a diesel services near by for check up - verdict -  timeing belt shreded and jumped - face a large bill or do it your self Shocked . I took the "yourself" advice.
That is basicaly wat happend.
Any ideas about the noice  Question

Could it be due to timing being well out, or the valves...

If it was me I would just bang a belt on in the right place and see how she goes after that Wink

Oh ok - your timing has been lost...

Put a new belt on - re time - and hope that the valves haven't been kissing the pistons...

Worst case you'll need a new head, new pistons (damaged crowns) and new push rods.

Best case, your injector pump is a tooth out hence the non starting, so re-time the injector pump...

Is there timing marks on the 2.8?

Both pulleys are locked with M* bolts and the bottom pulley has one big notch for TDC and 3? smaller notches to the left (looking from the front) for timing.

As I see it you need to lock the two pulleys, rotate the crank pulley till the big notch is on the TDC pin (making sure it's on No.1 piston TDC) and fit a belt.

Then hope all is OK. Like I say the push rods are supposed to fail before the valves and pistons so you should be OK, especially as it is turning over Wink

if the belt has jumped a few teeth then you can put a new belt on turn it over by hand a couple of times then check the valve clearances if they are too wide take the rocker shaft off and check the pushrods for straightness
bent push rods are common fault and weakest point
other common fault in this case is broken rockers
head and pistons don`t usually suffer any damage although it is possible

The timing marks are on the pully that the drive belts run on m8. They are very small though...
