I took my 3.1TD LS pick up into my local "keep em rolling" garage and the first thing the fella behind the counter said was "That'll blow up at 70000 miles - they all do"

He seemed to think there was a common problem of the 3.1TD engine seizing up at 70K. Anyone know if this is true - mine's only done 58k so I'm on a knife edge everytime I drive it now waiting for the big bang!

I have heard that generally speaking they are good beyond quater of a million miles, which one of the reasons i got the bighorn 3.1 TD.
Frequent oil and filter change, and timing belt change is a must at the stated milage... These engines do not like to be over filled with engine oil...
the rear crank shaft oil seal would be the first to leak. Exclamation

Thanks for all your replies regarding the reliability of the 3.1TD. I feel a lot better now about the vehicle and am enjoying driving it again and looking forward to many more years of fun with it.

Know a farmer who used to change the oil every week on his 3.1, the engine was basicaly running all day, he finaly gave up on it when the smoke got a bit bad at 750,000miles Smile

any engine will fail if not looked after it just stands to reason, if you change the oil regularly on a diesel and perform routine maintenance then there should be no reason for the engine to fail.

an oil change at 4000 miles for a diesel is my advice as they are very hard on it as opposed to  a petrol
