just a quick question
my mates tropper swb failed its mot on corrosion on the chassis- the mot station said it would be easier to remover the body to weld hte chassis- is it possible to remove the body? if so how difficult is it?

rear legs I guess? thats where mine went. The mech just undid the bolts and used a spreaded to lft the shell just enough to slide on big box section all over the offending parts. However as in a previous thread of mine he screwed up putting the spring hangers back Sad

there is corrosion all along it not jsut at the rear so im thinking taking the body off maybe the best bet
any idea what sort of time is involved?

Mine's had the whole rear end of the chassis replaced (LWB) from the front spring hangers back so yeah anything is possible. This was done by a previous owner so I've no idea exactly how it was done. A swb wil be easier obviously because of the size. Really Itl'l be a matter of undoing all the electrical connections, maybe stripping the seats out to lighten the shell up, remove spare wheel etc (doors off would make it even lighter, disconnect steering column, throttle cables, clutch pedal/hydraulics, brake hydraulics and all the body mounting bolts and then find some way of jacking it up (some good strong box section could probably be slid between the chassis and body front and back, jacked up maybe using a high lift jack and then supported on some trestles and then the chassis rolled out fronm underneath. I'd replace all the rubber body mounts when you put it back on.

would it be possible to use parts of the lwb chassis to repair the swb chassis? is it same chassis jsut longer?

It depends where the extra is, may well also be after the rear wheel as well as in the middle as many lwb 4x4's have a longer overhang at the back than the swb's so it may invove relocating the rear crossmember but anything is possible. Ideally you want to get underneath both with a tape and take some measurements.

Body off is a big one. Have a careful look before you try because the tops of the chassis rails tend not to be rotten so you don't need to get on top to weld & that gives you a good base to weld to.

hi have a friend with a sheet metal workshop and i used is guillotine and folder to make up channels out of 3mm mild steel to sleeve the bottom and sides of the chassis,like jonkem said the top of the chassis rarely rots so u dont need to remove the body.it took me about 6 hrs to sleeve about 70% of the chassis and the mot tester offered me a job so it must have been a job well done. if i can get enough interest i will have a word with my mate to price up making chassis section in 8' lengths and selling it to club members.

it is going to cost about £13 for a 8' length of 3mm channel, this is based on him knocking out 9 lengths at a time. just got to work the postage out now.
