Hi,

1994 swb 3.1 Big Horn. 22000km and going well.

Recently, when I have been off roading in 4WD and have driven about a quater of a mile, this really loud Whistle comes from somewhere around the centre of the front axle. When I accelerate, the whistle speeds up.
If I press the clutch pedal in and leave her free wheel, the whistle stops.
Weather I am in 4 wheel low or high box, its still there. This is a loud whistle and does not sound right. Any ideas? Any comments welcome.

regards
Fishertrooper.

Firstly, check the oil levels in the diff and transfer box.
Is it a whistle or a whine like a car reversing.

Hi Lads,

This is a defnite Whistle and not a whine. Another strange thing is when I take it out of 4WD,the whistle carries on for about 20 seconds as I drive and then stops. As I said when I put it in to 4WD, the whistle(Loud) starts after about 30 to 45 seconds. I have put it in first gear and 4WD and left her move along on her own and hung on to the side step lying down trying to get an idea where it is comming from. If I got any closer, I would have got rolled over. If anyone saw me, I would have been hand cuffed and put in a home for the mentally deranged. This really sounds like a shaft rotating in something with a (whistle, whistle, whistle, whistle).
I got this motor serviced about 4 months ago with timing belt and tensioner, brakes all round, all engine and gear box oils, air filter, all anti-rool bar bushes and all end stops(rubber bump stops). I also had the clutch replaced last year. I have spent over 3000 euros on this motor and if I now go and find it low on oil in one of the boxes Mad . I could never work on my motor really, but I have now built a garage on to my house and want to carry out my own repairs.
What would be the next step you would advise me to take lads?, and thanks for all your replies. Talk to you later.
