A handy guide from BF Goodrich here .... find your existing tyre size in the left hand column and you can work up in inches

Does anyone think there would be a problem putting 265/75 R16 tyres on my MK4?

it has 245/70 R16's at the moment but one is getting close to illegal and isn't going to pass the MOT.

They'll fit on fine with no tinkering at all.

for Mark 2/3/4

stock tyre = 245/70r16 = 9.6" x 29.5"

available sizes are:

245/75r16 = 9.6" x 30.5"
265/75r16 = 10.4" x 31.6"
235/85r16 = 9.25" x 31.7"

with a 2" lift (body or suspension)
255/85r16 = 10.0" x 33.1"
285/75r16 = 11.2" x 32.8"

and some maths to consider when choosing your tyres

rubber contact to the road from factory = 74.8" per tyre or 299.52" total contact area

think PSI as in Pressure per Square Inch of road contact, the amount of available pressure is a constant, the spread of it depends on the tyre size

and lets say the trooper weighs in at 2,150kg's with you and stuff in it

245/70r16 = 9.60"  x 7.80" x 4 tyres = 74.8" per tyre, 299.52" total contact area = 7.17kg/inch - Stock
245/75r16 = 9.60"  x 7.95" x 4 tyres = 76.3" per tyre, 305.28" total contact area = 7.04kg/inch
265/75r16 = 10.4"  x 8.00" x 4 tyres = 83.2" per tyre, 332.80" total contact area = 6.46kg/inch
235/85r16 = 9.25"  x 8.00" x 4 tyres = 74.0" per tyre, 296.00" total contact area = 7.26kg/inch
255/85r16 = 10.0"  x 8.30" x 4 tyres = 83.0" per tyre, 332.00" total contact area = 6.47kg/inch
265/75r16 = 10.4"  x 8.30" x 4 tyres = 86.3" per tyre, 345.20" total contact area = 6.22kg/inch

the bigger the contact area = less road Pressure, (floats over surface, can aquaplane easier)
the smaller the contact area = more road pressure (harder on the surface - digs in)

negative effects of the various sizes

wider tyres   -  floats over the surface, aquaplane easier, frontal/wind resistance, rolling/road resistance, weight/gearing, steering resistance, braking reduced, harsher on mechanicals (tie rods, cv's, etc.),  wider turning circle, initial cost

narrow tyres -  *beep* all

positive effects of various sizes

wider tyres   -  can corner faster, increases wheeltrack

narrow tyres - more downforce PSI (better traction), tighter turning circle, less resistance, better fuel economy, better performance, initial cost

I want to put these tyres pon my wifes truck as I have them in the garage but need to get some 15" Rims - I have 2 questions:

1.   Will they fit OK without modding the suspension etc. and not interfere with bodywork and steering gear etc. esp when offroading?

2.  What offest do I need to get on the rims to minimise any problems and any suggestions where to get a good but cheap set of suitable steel rims?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Mark
