|
|
Ive never had much dealings with auto hubs, and one seems to be sticking.
Not quite engaging properly and then not disengaging properly, i assume its through lack of use in 4x4.
Is there a quick fix or is it tool time ??
Please dont say tool time _________________ |

Most members who have had this problem Marky, seem to have swapped them out for manual hubs available from Milners. The auto hubs normally disengage by reversing for a few metres. Apart from that, it's spanner time, take them apart, repack with grease and give 'em another go. They're easy to get off and I believe that the CV joints don't take a lot of stick off road before they fail or get erratic (as you seem to have found out already).
The manual hubs are far more robust and a must for regular off-roading although obviously, you have to get out of your warm cab to lock/unlock them. But they make your truck look tough! _________________ 1999 Cougar with a NICE motor..

Ive only just got this motor, so i decided to give it a workout
I heard the normal bang as they engaged, but when i went back to 2wd for the road(hoping to leave the hubs locked to give the gearbox a stir) the nearside one was banging, so i reversed a few feet and the banging went down to a grating, i had to reverse about 100 meters to disengage the n/s hub properly.
I was hoping maybe someone knows a way to free them up without stripping the whole thing down.
Because i want to go play on the farm in the rain _________________ |

I don't thing there's a way other than to strip them down. I had mine in 4X4 yesterday up a rocky incline in the Forest and my hubs don't even make a noise when they engage/disengage!
Which is a bit worrying... _________________ 1999 Cougar with a NICE motor..

My 2.8 used to make really loud bang/clicking noise when in 4wd setting off and under load say going up a muddy bank, but after changing for manuals one (as instructed by MR T) all is now ok and no noise, and they get them some stick . _________________

Mabe the wrong amount of grease? or water ingress? or missed a shim after an old strip down? _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Wrong amount of grease i stripped them out and they was lightly coated in clean grease, the teeth on the n/s looked worn(probably due to the problem)
Tbh i dont have a clue how auto hubs work _________________ |

Aparently if you put two much in they don't work properly.
5.0 g in the cover and 8.0 g in the housing.
I gather that two much can cause problems. |
