I don't hang around any more, not good for the nerves. Just leave it now and go back an hour later for the result. Never failed an MOT in my life though  Surprised . Touch wood.

I've given up hanging around as well, I go for a walk if its not local or something.  I think I can safely say I've had more fail than I've had pass first go but thats the peril of running classics/old bangers!

I have two on mine... if you were to get run over you would see the plastic one under the engine then alloy one a bit further back.

OK, there are 3 in total. The front one is a heavy duty steel one that wraps up under the front bumper. The second one is a plastic / GRP one that has an air scoop in it that is superb for gathering tons of mud and pressing it firmly against the engine sump  Shocked . The third one is made from 2mm aluminium and is about as much use as a blancmange bull bar, and has soundproof padding on its upper side  Confused . I think this one only serves to stop you seeing what a wierd and wonderful design the exhaust downpipe is, coz it bends the minute it comes into contact
with anything.
My old 2.8 had proper steel protection, and one day I intend to make some steel ones for this motor.
