Help!!!!!

I've got an import 1992/3 3.1 TD Lotus Bighorn Trooper with about 80,000 odd miles on the clock.  On recent trip up to Yorkshire it started making what can only be described as a 'noisy bearing' type of noise but with a rev dependent vibration thrown in.  I initially thought it was either the altenator or water pump bearings saying goodbye but I disconnected the altenator/water pump and A/C and power steering pump belts and the noise was still there whan I revved the engine up.  The only other thing that was left rotating (that I can think of) was the turbocharger.  However, having consulted a local firm that overhauls turbos they don't think it is the turbo as it appears to turn freely without any apparent lateral play in the bearings (I had the intake hose off and looked at the turbo intake whilst the motor was on tickover and it was spinning over nicely).  The noise seems to peak at around 3,000 rpm and if you back off on the throttle more or less dissapears.

All indications of water temperature and oil pressure seemed to be normal (it did seem to get a bit warmer than usual but I think that was probably due to towing a glider up Sutton Bank).

Any ideas on possible sources for the noise would be gratefully appreciated???????????????????
