hello

my trooper has aquired a strage problem it is a J reg 2.8 swb citation

and ocasionally when you turn on the headlights only the side light come on, and the strage thing, full beam works.

Tried turning them on and off and nothing happens, but that not the strage part.

When you open the drivers door the headlights come on! problem sorted????  I understand that it might be a loose contact, but how would opening the door fix it?

Joe

Sounds like it could be an earth problem.  Though i am no expert.  Does it improve if you put a new negative lead from the body to the battery?  Or if you put a negative wire from the bulb to the battery?

Another thought, try taking all the multi-pin connectors in the wiring loom apart, spraying them with WD40 or electrical contact cleaner and putting them back together.

I'd also say bad earth, cars with bad earths do the strangest things.  Find all the earth connections undo them, clean back to bare metal and refit.

A bit like the mk3 escorts, pull up at the lights, put the indicator on as well as the footbrake, and hey presto a light show  Shocked

ok,
but just to make sure, it's not the act of slamming the door shut, its just the opening of the door

Opening the door completes the circuit for the interior light.  Could allow the headlight circiut to complete too.  Worth looking at all the earth connections, as said above can do funny things!
