ive got a 3.1 trooper driving home the other day and the warning lights on the dash started flashing i stopped and checked the fan belts but they were fine but the volt meter was reading about 11 volts got back tryed starting it but not enough power
i got it going then i was told that when i put my foot on the brakes one was brigher than the other and one of the side lights went out

any ideas would the alternator be causing troubles like this

ive put a meter on the alternator and its discarging the batteries

but would it cause the lights to play up

please help

Simon, that sort of discharging usually implies a knackered blocking diode in the alternater, not as though I know anything about alternators just applied some logic.  Repaired a mates engine management system with similar problem

Before you go spending any money, check all the earthing points on the vehicle.  I had similar symptoms to that on a 3.0D and it was a loose earth connection.

Cheers

I too had something similar and it was just Farley quarry mud making my slightly too slack fan-belt slip.
Best to check the simple stuff first - you might be lucky and find it costs nowt. Hope so.  Smile
