Having a blonde moment, ( not good, i've got brown hair )!! Confused

After reading through forums about use of 4wd, i have noticed that a lot of you recommend NOT using it on road. However, the handbook for my car says to drive with locked hubs for a minimum of 10 miles to ensure proper lubrication of drive axle components etc. Is it safe to do this on road or would i be better finding a big field to drive round? Very Happy
I don't want to break anything by using 4x4 on road, but i don't want to break it by not using it either, ( if you get what i mean ).

Any advice on this would be great.

Thanks
Mia

Its not a Blonde moment,
Put it in 4x4 drive forward in a strieght line for about 4 or 5 feet, put it back in 2wd and drive as normal,
They will unlock when you reverse and you wont cause any damage  Very Happy

Just needed to be sure that i wasn't going to damage anything by doing so.  Not brave enough to try off roading with her yet, need to armour plate everything first, but one day !!!

Thanks for that, don't feel so scared about doing it now.

need to know what model you have
do you have manual or auto hubs  or shift on the fly
what you have read is correct but how you go about it differs

with manual hubs you lock the hubs then drive in two wheel drive

with auto hubs you shift into 4H drive forward 2-3metres then shift back to 2H as long as you dont reverse the front hubs will stay locked

with shift on the fly there is no need to do any thing as the front offside wheel turns the shaft constantly thereby moving the oil in the diff

the idea is to get the oil in the  front diff moving over the bearings and gears

I have 3.1td with auto hubs. Am learning slowly about the way to lock and unlock hubs, but was not sure if this was a good idea on road. Had 'orrible visions of bits seizing or falling off ! Just thought i'd check with people who know what they're doing with these things. Am a 4x4 virgin ! Laughing

you should have no trouble if you follow the instructions as you wont actually be in 4 wheel drive  dont forget to reverse to unlock the hubs after a suitable distance

its the driving on hard surfaces in 4 H or 4L where problems start as the transmission gets wind up becausethe differences in cicumference the wheels turn at different speeds
rather like when you go round a corner inside wheel goes slower the differential allowws this to happen
when all four wheels are being driven there is no central differential therefore no slip
loose ground/mud/grass all give this slip

With auto hubs what still turns when they are not engaged.

As I understood it nothing is connected, but in an article on lifting they recommend using manual hubs to save the CV's Confused

Twisters "brum brum"<<(for chris b) is shift on the fly it only unlocks one side, auto or manual hubs unlock both sides  Smile
