hi all -- i,m getting ready for another oil change , i,m just wondering with the temp dropping out side , should i go for 10w40 instead of the 15w 40 it as in at the moment.
i have noticed that on v.cold mornings that the engine does sound slightly noiser untill warm , is the current oil too thick ?
what do you think ,
its a 3.1 TD by the way , 198,000 miles
thanks all _________________ 93 SWB 3.1Turbo Duty intercooler

15w40 is good down to about -15c i would just use it, thinner oil will soon get very thin when the engine is hot. _________________ |

your engine will sound noisier on cold mornings till it gets warm as the injection pump has a temperature controlled timing advance this will make it sound a little harsher till it warms up then it switches off and its back to normal
its all automatic controlled by sender unit in the thermostat housing |

Ah you learn something new everyday (or every 5 minutes in my case ), cheers Grandad.
Out of interest, I used an expensive fully synthetic oil during my last oil change which has added about 1/4 bar to the oil pressure during my normal 3000 rpm motorway cruise |

Ian i`ve had engines where the oil has been like treacle after a few oil changes the oil pressure has risen
fully synthetic is thinner to start with and also very detergent like so cleans the build up of accumulated dirt so you get a better reading |

So should be no probs with full synthetic? Gives over 4 bar at 2000 rpm when stone cold |
