Although do make sure you are legal as my friend found out to his cost when his van overtook his car on the motorway and the police fined him 180 quid for the pleasure (although his insurance paid out for a new van)

Which weight are they referring to with the 3500kgs ... Unladen Tow car weight? Gross Tow car weight? Towing capacity?

Chris

It should be on the VIN plate under the bonnet.

One will be the weight of the car, one will be the maximum towing weight and one will be the total that the two cannot exceed.

A quote off their site ...

Quote:
The 85% guideline is generally recommended for beginners. This industry recommendation restricts the laden weight of the caravan to 85% of the towcar's kerbweight. For the more experienced tower the industry recommendation is that the laden weight of the caravan does not exceed 100% of the car's kerbweight. This is not the law but it is good advice. Outfits in which the caravan outweighs the car are definitely not recommended.

No, you can't tow this caravan with a trooper or bighorn.  Yes it is within the weight limits of the towing vehicle but because it weighs less than 3.5t when loaded, the maximum length of trailer which you can legally tow is 7m(23.1feet).
More infomation can be found on the DoT website.

Thanks for that webby, These caravans are usually sited permanently on a site and not used for a lot towing/touring, which I now know why!!, I was just looking at it because it was going for the right price.

Thanks again.....Found out some good information for future use.

I have towed a 3000kg boat and trailer combination and the Trooper is ideal and legal for this, although you are unwise to exceed 50mph with that weight. The 85% thing is a caravan club recommendation and it seems no one anywhere will contradict this officialy.

My boat and tralier exceeded 7m, but with boats you are allowed to overhang the tralier by an amount I can't remember, but the total length of my combination was about 8.5m. Not sure how this applies to a caravan though, whether the "van" can be defined as a load separate to the "trailer" or chassis, if Hobby said no then I guess you can't tow it because its too long and thats it Sad

Aha! I have found it... the caravan is within the weight limit of the trooper but at 29ft its over the maximum length of 7m (23ft approx).
