I also tow a hobby caravan with my 3.1td. It tows no problem and the weight is fine. The problem is the width of the hobby. Technically you cant tow these caravans unless it's with a commercial vehicle over 3.5tonnes. The width is only about 6inches over the legal size i think(3" per side). The hobby comes in at the same width as an truck. They are legal on the roads so don't understand the problem myself.

No, you can't tow this caravan with a trooper or bighorn.  Yes it is within the weight limits of the towing vehicle but because it weighs less than 3.5t when loaded, the maximum length of trailer which you can legally tow is 7m(23.1feet).
More infomation can be found on the DoT website.

Have I missed something? Is this trailer length different to caravan length? Otherwise there are a lot of illegal units around, mine is 23ft 6" and that's still a single axle, most of the popular twin axles must be over that length.

Its the length excluding the tow hitch and a frame

Sorry posted in a rush, didn't make it very clear.
An inch here and there won't make too much difference so long as you know where you stand.
As has been said on here before now VOSA are making more checks no-one is safe and it's only a matter of time before they move from cars and trailers on to caravans.

I didn't read the " less tow frame bit". Rolling Eyes One would suppose the caravan makers of the twin axles, make them on the limit. The continental vans though are big, I know of a few monsters in our club and one of them is towed by a car! Shocked

As long as people know their limits then it will all be ok!?!  It only takes a min not paying attention for something to get out of control.  Having had trailers snake on me in the past, i am now much more careful.  Would not like to be in a car if the trailer took control, its bad enough in a heavy trooper!

I would agree, I grew up on a farm and have towed a lot, the police will look for things that are blatantly dangerous and not within the design limits of the vehicle. You have to be sensible with weights and loading, it's never nice when the tail wags the dog! Shocked

if you tow without a rear number plate and stay below  50mph you will not get pulled its a unwritten rule with the travellers ,go above 50 and you will get pulled.

The caravan is within the weight limits of the trooper but at 29ft long is over the maximum length towable by a vehicle under 3500kg

Forgive me if I've missed it, but having a quick look through the thread have we ascertained whether this Hobby is 29 ft total length or just the body.

Went to look at the hobby earlier, its 26ft interior length(the body)  29 ft in total, so still too long to 'legally'  tow.  Shame because its in mint condition.
