Friend recently bought 3.1 Duty with 100k on clock.  No problems until this week when engine oil is showing in radiator (water system).  Any ideas?  Advice welcome.

Hi there

Is there a lot of oil showing up in the coolant?,
Is the coolant temp gague reading normal?,
has there been any drop in oil or water levels?
and is there any mayonasey substance visable on the oil dip stick?

its possible this could be a slowly failing head gasket. We might be more able to help with a bit more info Wink

Proably one of two things.

1/ If your lucky, the oil cooler in the bottom of the rad (I think this is right??) is leaking, so oil is getting into the water?

2/ Head gasket's on it's way out.

My wifes car has had the same symptons for ages Not Trooper/Big horn though, we had a pressure test done on it nothing obvious showed up. I now understand that Snap-on make a tester which takes a sample of water and from the chemicals in the water will tell you if the head gasket is failing.  Her car decided to finally give a blast of mucky water out of the expansion tank last week. I took off a radiator hose and the waterways were covered with a creamy mess. So I think shes blown a gasket.

Regards Les
