I am having problems with the Auto box on my 1998 3.5 Trooper, has a burning smell coming from underneath and is jerky pulling in top gear from 2000 revs? - seems ok when driven in 3rd.
Havn't had time to check ATF level/condition yet, hopefully @ weekend.
Has done 185K so expect some major component gone u/s.  

Also, will a later box from a 2001 be a straight swap or did this year have the torque on demand transfer box?
How can you tell the difference?
