Hi all,
Hope you dont mind me joining you, allthough i dont have a trooper i have a modded frontera which im currently tryin to fit in an Isuzu 3.2 V6!
Unfortunatley im having a few problems with the gearbox an wondered if you guys could help me out!
On newer fronteras 4wd is engaged via a button operating a vacuum in the front axle, is this the same in a Trooper and if so what year did they start doing this? i have been offered a couple of gearboxes from different years from breakers saying they would fit but im not so sure!
I need one that has 4wd selectable on the transfer box as i have done a hilux axle conversion on my truck!

Looking forward to some replys

Thanks

Mark

Ok not a lot of replys yet!
So,
Could anyone tell me if the gearbox from a 97 trooper would fit the newer 3.2v6 block? is it a standard block used through all the years for the 3.2 and the 3.5?

Cheers

Mark

i don`t think i can be much help not  a lot of experience with petrols what i can tell you is  the part no`s change nearly every year for these gearboxes that doesn`t mean that they wont fit as the changes are for things like axle ratios and auto cruise control and shift on the fly
with shift on the fly its the transfer box that is different to enable to change while moving
its "probably" the case that all the boxes will fit just some of the functions won`t be needed
shift on the fly operated with a button on the i think came in 98 before that it was operated by the 4x4gear lever with a switch on the side of the g/lever turret

Hello Grandad,

Does that mean all the V6 gearboxes have only low & high ratio on the transfer lever with the 4WD operated by a button for the vac operated 4WD system? Does that make sense? Embarassed

Cheers

if its shift on the fly then the switch is on the gear box or on the dash to lock the front axle to give 4x4

it depends on the type of front axle how the 4x4 operates

if it has manual or auto free wheel hubs then the transfer box will when put in 4x4 will drive the front axle and it will be in 4x4
it does not matter which g/box is used for this

the only exception would be a torque on demand g/box

Thanks Grandad,

I was under the impression that the selector on the transfer box was for high low ratio only and the button engaged 4wd via a vacuum in the front axle! I am trying to get a gearbox to match my Isuzu 3.2 and drive a set of Hilux axles, So 4wd needs to be obtained at the transfer box as the live axle has manual hubs, this make sense?

Cheers

Mark, from my knowledge of Hilux front axles, you need a pre SOTF setup which is pre "96?, I know that my "95 Bighorn has a lever on the centre consol that does
          ___4H
         I      I
         I     2H
        4L
& like a Hilux you can have Auto or Manual locking hubs to complete the picture.
HTH, Steve.

Well i have just been informed that the 3.2 transfer box is 2wd untill the button is pressed, then a motor in the transfer box engages 4wd and then actuates the solenoids to engae the front axle via a vacuum

does this sound right or am i talking rubbish?

Cheers

This sounds like the later one to me. If no-one else can help, I'll ask the guy I work with who has a 3.2 & let you know on Monday.
Steve.

the transfer box with solenoid inside is a torque on demand box you do not want that one any early box will do if it has 2H 4H & 4L on the transfer g/stick

Ok,
I now have my gearbox!
It has all the 4wd selections on the transfer lever which is a good start!
Then it seems to have 3 sender units, 1 for the 4wd selector light, 1 for the reversing lights and 1 about an inch from the top of the box near the bell housing, any idea what this last one is???? Confused  Confused

Cheers
