Hi guys, this is a really stupid question I know but can someone explain the manual locking hubs on the hilux i just bought.

I assume that to get any benefit from 4wd mode i need to lock them or is this untrue and in fact i only need to lock them if i want front diff lock?

Also will i damage the diff by driving in 2wd with them locked or indeed driving on road with in 4wd with them lockd.

PLease help, I just bought it last week and need to get it dirty!

Cheers Very Happy

Dead easy mate.
you need to lock them for 4x4 to work as they lock the wheel to the drive.
If they was not locked you would be in rear wheel drive even if you selected 4x4 low.
Also when they are locked you can drive quite safely in 2 H without causing any damage, they are there primarily for fuel consumption and wear and tear on the front axle.

Thanks buddy, that is pretty much what i thought but a mate was telling me i had to unlock them etc.

Will keep them unlocked for fuel consumption on road but it's good to know i can just lock them up before going off road so i dont have to stop once i am in the mud etc.

thanks again

Neil

Thanks, sounds like good advice, would you imaginie the front diff will be locked when in 4wd and with hubs locked, i dont see any way of locking it inside the cabin and i guess it is going to be pretty rubbish off road if not.  cant find an owners manual, its a work vehicle really but i would like to get it dirty now and again.

Cheers
Neil

There may be a diff lock, but if you can't see any thing?

My father in law has a land cruiser, and the diff locks are operated from a dial that you turn. It's located on the left and below the steering wheel. Might be the same???
