Hi,
Could you possibly help with a clutch queery.... I have a 3.0 dt long wheel base trooper. It has had all the recall work done ( thank god ) my problem is that I have to fetch a lot of wood from a steep location. I always have it in four wheel drive and it copes fantastically, I mean really fantastically. It pulls two ton of logs up a muddy 1 in 3 ..... My problem is this, if I stay in two wheel drive it's no good but it doesn't make the god awful smell. If I place it in four wheel, it stinks. It smells like nothing I have ever smelt. The clutch seems fine and is biting at about half way to two thirds up. Is my clutch going or is it soemthing to do with the fwd side of things?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

It is definately a clutchy smell but I can't be sure because of the fact that it only seems to do it in four wheel drive.    Confused    Confused

Are you using 4wd on the road? Also worth checking your transfer box oil...

Thanks for the pm.... I don't use it on the road, only on the inclined dirt track areas, it actually pulls fantastically well. Do you think I should take it in and get the "experts" to have a look at it ??

Are you taking your foot off the clutch pedal and using low range, if not you could be slipping it to get the power to pull the load ?

I am using the normal road range for the box and just flicking the switch on the dash to place it into 4wd. I am not aware of keeping my foot on the clutch although I suppose I may be. Why would it only do it in 4wd though and not 2wd ?   even more confused    Confused

Cheers, Any suggestions as to how to check the bits to see what might be the problem, ie; the clutch or the 4wd system. Remember I am a thicky though eh !!! Wink

4WD (Hi or Lo) is only for use if you really need it (ie offroad, snow, mud etc). When you engage 4WD on the road it locks the transmission front to back and so any difference in the tyres or turning corners etc "winds up" the transmission and puts a massive amount of strain on the transfer box etc.

If you need 4WD for setting off then its best to use it then shift out again as soon as you are moving.

The 3.0DT motor is a powerful beast! I have used mine for towing 3.5tons and it just keeps going...

Trust me it pulls more than you may realise. I have a 3.1 also and it pulls even better.
