Hey Fleur mon ami! Not dissing you man, just incredulous!  Shocked

It's pulling power is not in doubt, but tell me, what stops you falling off the 1 in 3 "slope" ?

That's not only steep it's near vertical! Remember, we are pulling 4 tons up a near vertical slope here. Even a tracked vehicle or a winch would have "issues". That's for every 3' of slope, it rises 1'. Blimey......

Well, I'd love to see a photo of that....and so probably would Jeremy Clarkson, he had enough trouble getting a "bare" Disco 3 up a small mountain with much lesser slopes than that.......

Well, that's a  great page and illustrates gradients properly. I was going on the premise that 1 in 1 was vertical (up one unit, along 1 unit) but acording to them, it's 45 degrees so yes, 1 in 3 is just "steep".

Still an impressive performer eh?

What an irritating noise. I turned it down and ripped off the knob!

Think you are all missing the point...the slope of the track isn't the question, the clutch smelling is!
If you feel it needs 4wd, then i would suggest using low ratio as well.  Try it and see if it still makes the same smell.
Living in Suffolk we have very few hills so cannot help there but am used to towing heavy loads.  I too move alot of wood with an Ifor williams and when i feel it needs 4wd to get out of the woods then i use low ratio.  One side of the wood is served with a private road so i am not limited to 3.5t  Wink  and even with that weight on don't get too many complaints from the trooper.
