Try it when stationary first.
Then try it driving slowly with front wheels in a straight line.
Mine sometimes seems to take a while to disengage when I have used it.
(Oh and I'm assuming you are not doing this on dry tarmac otherwise you can knacker it up!) _________________ 3.0TD LWB Citation |

Hi,
Thanks for the reply-not sure when you buy 2nd hand what has been done to the vehicle previous? by knackered is that a replaceable part or the whole drive gone?
I can change between high and low ratio ok..
but in the last bit of snow I pressed the button but the rear wheels were the only drive. |

Just a thought,
Have you got manual or auto locking front hubs? _________________ 94 Big Horn 3.1 Lotus Auto

It's auto front hubs - man. gear box. I tried most suggestions in the book slow forward and swithching the 4x4 on and off. |

Should be auto hubs being as it's mk4.
(but I'm guessing as never thought about it on mine ) _________________ 3.0TD LWB Citation |

Perhaps auto hubs could do with a stripdown & clean.
There's a post about it somewhere on here recently. _________________ 94 Big Horn 3.1 Lotus Auto

Looks like a fairly simple DIY job, so any garage should be able to do it.
Aparantly you don't even need to remove the wheels. _________________ 94 Big Horn 3.1 Lotus Auto

The mk4 with shift on the fly doesnt have locking hubs, it has vaccum pipes that engage/ disengage 1 driveshaft.
These pipes are prone to popping off _________________ |

you could engage 4wd and jack the front up, then spin the wheels by hand to see if the servo has locked the driveshaft. _________________ |

Hi
on these it's not just a vacumn pipe fault
but also if not used for ages the servo's and vacumn cylinders
get very sticky
try changing into 4 wd when the engine and gearbox are red hot say
afte a good run
it could also be the wiring
this is a common fault
trace the wiring and look for breaks
does the 4wd light flash when starting and then go out
or does it stay on?
cheers

Hi
ok if it stays flashing then its 99% a wiring fault
not vacumn pipes
cheers
