I wonder how you can tell what the diff gearing is on the trooper.

I read that some American troopers had a wide tyre pack with 31" tyres and 4.77 gears.

Indipendantx4 have 5.38 rears but no fronts.

MK1
4.3-1 on a diesel
4.555-1 on a petrol

Yes it is, so it looks like the petrol has a higher ratio than the diesel.

So there is nothing in this country that does the 4.77 diff gears.

Any one good at maths?

If you fitted gears from a petrol into a diesel diff, what size tyres would you need to go up to to retain the gearing as it is.

What about the bighorns like siwebs what is there diff gearing?

Yeah I put a link on for the same product.

It looks very interesting, but I think cripplingly expensive at the same time.

Ok I have worked out some figures (maths is not my strong point, so these may well be wrong)

Driving a mk1 2.8td with standard 235/75/15 tyres and 4.3 diffs.

For every 1.071 meter you travel you would travel 1.153 meters with 31x10.5r15 tyres on.

If you fit 4.555 diffs from a petrol mk1 and 31x10.5r15 tyres you will travel 1.088 meters.

So it looks like fitting 4.555 diffs from a petrol mk1 means you can drop the 29" tyres and put on 31" tyres giving 1" of lift under the axles, with minimal change in gearing.

This site might help calculating difference in actual speed with different sized tyres...

I've found it well useful for speedo purposes...

I have got that.

It's the diff gearing in relation to the tyre size that I am trying to work out.
