Can you help?

I have a 3.1D Trooper SWB, 2001 (51 plate) with a Mark 4 body (import) - apparently it doesn't have a timing belt but has gears instead.  It has already been in garage to have the belt changed, but I was told it didn't have one!!!  Local dealer is clueless.  Any info (relating to this issue oir otherwise) in this model would be greatly received.  (It has done 76,000 miles)

Thanks

That's a new one on me......MKiv body with a 3.1 that is.

We do know some 3.1's have gears and are mainly imports. If you have a plastic timing cover it will be a belt and if it's metal - a gearset.

Did it come in from Cyprus by any chance? Their spec seems to have gears instead of belts. Other than that I presume it will be basically the same engine as the last of the MKIII's which was 1998.

Grandad will know any other differences for sure....

I have heard of this before, and the one I saw in an article somewhere was indeed a Cypriat motor.

the only differences between cambelt engines and engines with a gear driven cam is just that. the timing and settings for the tappets are exactly the same
your lucky you don`t have to worry about the belt breaking

I saw this a couple of years back in a Malaysian Isuzu website, ie, official website not enthusiasts, this same combination, from memory the 3.1 was rated at about 130 hp, this would mean it had the electrically controlled injection. I'll see if I can find it again. Probably superseded by now.
Steve.
