Now then, now running a 1996 Commercial 3.1 after blowing the piston rings on my 1992 3.1......oops.. Sad  Sad

Have got all the ARB bar, winch, torsion bars etc etc etc swapped over onto the new(er) one, but am now seriously considering some kind of roll bar, cage. Has anyone any experience of putting one in a SWB 3.1?

I have a friend who has a full safety devices cage fitted to his 3.1. It comes up the dash and follows the A pillars, joins up with bars that follow the B pillars then has two stays down into the back with a diagnol between them. IMHO it seems a little intrusive around the dash for everyday use, maybe a hoop that just follows the B pillars would suit better for everyday use?

Anyone done similar or can recommend anyone out there ?

Many thanks!  Smile  Very Happy  Smile

I've made a 10 point cage for the MKI and chose some quite small diameter but thick wall pipe so it's not too big inside. It means you need more parts but no big deal to work out the triangulation.

You can get some excellent info & inspiration at:
http://e30m3performance.com/tech_articles/cage_symposium/cage_symposium.htm

Sorry you'll need to cut & paste the link!

Many thanks jonkem, some seriously impressive workmanship there.

While im not intending on creating something as striking as those designs, i fear that making and fitting my own may still be beyond my ability!  Smile  Embarassed  Smile

Safety Devices have wondered off to Poland now, so don't tink they will be as flexable as they used to be.
Might be worth trying Protection and Performance.  Was impressed with their cages on show at Donnington.  On the Shogun and the Ranger on display outside.
By the nature of a roll cage it will always intrude on something, be it internal or external.  Depends on how you want you truck to look i suppose.

That's a bit ironic considering that Poland appears to have wandered over here..... Wink

PMSL

as with any sort of construction, triangles have always been deemed the stongest form that a shape can take!
While the cages shown in the link were a fantastic bit of design and engineering, im sure you will not require a roll cage of the same quality!
Simple thing to remember is, where there is a joint (weded or bolted) it is a weak point! where there is a bend and the tube has been stessed, it is a weak point!
Beaf these points up and make sure you have a bit of diagonal bracing (creating triangles) and you wont go far wrong!
this is my old sj on its side at devils pit

It had a simple roll cage and only had 3 diagonal braces, but when it went over and hit the ground it was solid!

will see if i can dig out a couple more pics if you are interested

Cheers

Mark

Cheers for the replies guys, some pics would be much appreciated Mark, although i dont know if my welding skills will be up to it!  Smile  Confused  Smile

Had a look at the performance and protection website, seem to do some impressive work. Also had a look at North Offroad, anyone heard anything about them? Looks to be majorly land rover based (surprise surprise Laughing Rolling Eyes Laughing ) but standard of work seems to be up there - as far as you can tell on a website anyway

Anyone had any work done by either ?

Untill the cam belt snapped it was a cracking little motor, and off road was a hell of a lot more agile than a trooper or a frontera!
Got another one, hoping to do a few trials in it next winter with a bit of luck!

Cheers

Not knocking mate! They are generally better educated than our kids, work harder & smarter etc.

But, this is perhaps for a different forum.....

You should go for the best quality cage you can. The info on the website gives you an idea of the design theory that should be obvious to see in any cage you think of buying, whether large or small diameter.

Don't be fooled into a false sense of security by having a couple of large diameter hoops bolted into you car.

They might make some better cages for 4x4s now. They like a bit of Land Cruiser in Poland!
