Just got it back from the MOT.

Failed on:  Handbrake (not surprising)
               Rear leaf springs
               One Windscreen jet.
and needs new tyre (Probably get a Marshal for £70)

Funny thing though, I had tightened up the rear cable for the brakes
and held fine - though I think the awkward stick was the query for the garage - so will have to demonstrate this to them.

Also the water jet on passenger side is not working - Probably blocked,
having looked at these they seem to be crimped metal instead of single holed plastic ones you normally get on a car - any good way of making sure this is cleaned out ?

And just order two rear leaf kits from Milner's so going to have a busy time soon.

Sad

Pin worked a treat.

Though it looks like i'm now going to have to clean/strip
OR adjust the rear brakes properly to get them to work.

Is this easy - I remember a few links to the guide on this,
But time is now short as also got to fit the Rear Leafs and shackles
when they arrive before MOT expires.

If the handbrake held fine then they should pass it  Question
The adjusters are on the caliper, a tiny allen key thats hidden, if i had a pic i would post it.

Exclamation Well....

They measure effective at 3%, though to get enough for r.brakes
to dig in requires a ton of force on the handbrake.

So i'll give the allen key adjusters a go.

Hopefuly that'll save a garage bill..

Exclamation

Replaced leaf springs - no seized bolts so made easier....

Sent back to garage for re-test and failed on ineffective handbrake.

Now, I have adjusted as per the instructions posted,
with handbrake loose (i.e. loosening adjustor nut and locking nut)
then winding back the allen bolt and winding back in till it grips.

Still, you have to really apply a huge amount of foce on the handbrake
to get them to grip enough for a pass.

Not sure why ? pads look okay ?

Any ideas ? the callipers look new'ish so can't be those.

Though if the cable works by pulling on the caliper lever, then
perhaps there is some other adjustment with the caliper I need to
do ?

Help.....

I press the footbrake as i'm applying it, it tends to work better.

I'll give it a go.

Though I don't think the MOT centre would do it during the
test

Worth checking that the cables at the back end are running freely inside the sheaths. There are a couple of bends that tend to split over time and allow water in. B***dy expensive to replace so worth try to free if this is the problem.
Disconnect both ends of cable and move by hand to test.

Maybe the auto adjusters are nearly on a click but not quite???

I don't really understand how this works, but this is what I did on mine and it worked last MOT. This may of course be a coincidence Rolling Eyes

I backed off with the Alan key, then I wound the piston out a touch, then put the calipers back on and re adjusted with the Alan key.

Note: If you put pads on your self, I have been told that if you do not back off the Alan bolt you will kn@cker the self adjusting mechanism.

Sounds like a good plan,

I'll give that a go too.

Just a query, there seems to be two allen key bolts
one at the bottom of the calliper (THIS IS the one to adjust!)
and one at the top ? (not sure what the top one is?)
Question

The Alan key at the bottom is the sliding bolt that holds the caliper on to the pad carrier, if you have moved this tighten it back up!

The alen key you want is behind a small cap next to the bleeder. It is a 14mm or 17mm head I think. The alan key is a 4mm or around there anyway.

Spay some penatrent in the hole first as I snaped one once Rolling Eyes
