After my recent experiences (nearly buying a 2002 3 ltr Citation, fell through), I was wondering what people feel I could get realistically for my budget.

I am looking for a diesel SWB, and am willing to spend up to 6k ish.

I have seen good reports about the 2.8 - were these made right up to the end of the 'Troops run?

I don't really know much about the 'specs besides the Duty and Citation - can anybody advise me of others available?

To give me a direction of what to look for!

The 2.8 was great, but you will do well if you find one that does not need constant attention with a welder.

A good late 3.1 mk3 would be the best bet I would say.

Or a 3.0 mk4 if the work has been done.

There are pros and cons for both, but i would go foe the proven reliability of the 3.1 myself.

When was the change over from Mk3 to Mk 4?

Think the change over was about 98/99 to the MK4 (assuming you mean 3.1 to 3.0)

I really like my 3.0TD - great power and drive.

As Matski said just make sure all the recalls have been done on the 3.0TD and you should be OK

I have a 98 Monterey 3.1td, exactly the same apart from the badge, I do believe the Trooper went to the 3.0 a little earlier in 97, though you may find a few stragglers. You might find a Monty a bit cheaper too, and Isuzu recognize the chassis no too, so parts not an issue.

There are S and T plates out there of both MK 3 (3.1) and MK4 (3.0).
The main external difference (for quick reference) is the front end, the MK3 looks like mine at the front, the MK4 ...doesn't

I just took a quick peek at Autotrader - you can get a 2002 SWB 3.0TDI for your £6000.

Not a bad deal?!

Silly question, but is the SWB much smaller than the LWB? It's hard to tell in the piccies!

Whilst I'm asking silly questions, how about another?

I am right in assuming that a Bighorn is simply a better-specced LWB Trooper, a bit like the Shogun/Pajero thing?

It's just as I widen my search, things get more confusing!

yes im sure it is ive  got a 96 3.1 lotus bighorn and its got everything fully loaded except for leather so i would say a bighorn is a great choice its better than the trooper (more goodies) and with it being an import they are normally in excellent condition mines been in uk 2 years now and i can honestly say its imaculate and the wife uses it everyday school run etc and she loves it in fact i have trouble getting to drive it these days  Wink .  Wink plus the money you save buying an import will get you and the misses in the sun for two weeks  Wink

If you are buying a 3.0D then go for the citation/insignia and you will get as many goodies as a bighorn and it's not imported either.

The only thing my 3.0 Citation doesn't have is leather seats otherwise it has everything

Nothing against imports at all.

Just not all imports are as good as they seem - also you can get a newer car for your money if you buy a UK trooper rather than an import for some reason (or at least that what it looked like when I bought mine)

The 3.0 imports are mainly from Cyprus and can be a pain to get sorted for recalls etc. Also (and im not sure if its an issue) most of the Bighorns are auto's
