Hi there I hope someone can shed some light on a cooling problem I have with my 1999 3.1 td moterey. The temp gauge sits around half way under normal driving but once on the motorway doing 70 or above the needle starts to climb towards the top of the gauge. Is this normal or is there something knackered. I have only just bought the car and hope the head gasket is not blown there is no evidence under the oil filler cap and it is not loosing water.

1/2 to 3/4 can be normal, but i would say the rad is partialy blocked either on the outside or inside.

BTW Welcome  Very Happy

Thanks for the quick reply I hope it is as simple as that I will flush the radiator out and fit a new thermostat.

Thanks marky where exactly are these flaps? I have ordered a CD manual off eebuygum but it would be great if you could point me in the right direction. I want it fixed before the wife ends up cooking it!

hi
always worth checking the rad for cold spots
and cleaning out the fins
does the temp drop if you put the interior fans on hot?
and does it sit nice when in traffic
regards
Steve

Hi had a good look at the radiator today and gave it a clean with the hose at which point a lot of the fins fell out at the top of the radiator. Booked it in for tomorrow morning for a new radiator. Hope this fixes it, I will let you know how I get on.

The fins don't work nearly as well when they are very brittle. Check what happens with the new rad. The other flap is immediately before the intercooler with a bulbous actuator stuck on the side of it.

Having bother finding the one next to the intercooler tho.

I'd open the joint on the exhaust one and if possible remove the flap totally (they are more trouble than they are worth). Your 3.1 is very late but should be the same as this one: The actuator has the number 2 arrowed to it.

Thanks for the excellent diagram unfortunately mine is slightly different it does not have the actuator shown, the small pipe on mine goes straight into the intercooler. I will see how it goes tomorrow with the new radiator. If its still overheating I will get the flap in the exhaust looked at.

The pipe connected to the intercooler is a pressure pipe to advance the fueling (just for future reference) Smile
