If the smoke is mainly white/grey then immediately suspect glowplugs. Try operating the ignition key once until "heater" light goes out on dashboard then switch off, switch on again, wait until the "heater" symbol goes out then crank it. If the glow plugs are weak it should fire up straight away on 2nd start cycle with minimal smoke.
If it's blue smoke then worn valve stem seal or oil getting into the turbo. If you travel at 50 mph and take your foot off the accelerator for a distance and allow engine braking, when you apply throttle again check your mirror - if there's a puff of blue smoke on acceleration, then it's valve seals for sure.
It's most likely to be glow plugs though, mine has done almost 100,000 miles and no blue smoke, but get the dreaded 2 1/2 glow plugs working experience, misfires and grey/white smoke for a couple of seconds. _________________ 1999 Cougar with a NICE motor..

if it is the valve stem oil seals is it going to cause big problems and is it got to be done straight away also is it a big job to do the seals and also the glow plugs |
