Flush the whole system to rid it of gunk, a few have had blocked rads.
And yes, you can get rid of the viscous fan and fit electric, they improve performance to  Very Happy

Try flushing the system first - there's no point increasing the cooling if the system itself is full of rubbish? Might solve your problem straight off with 0 cost involved Smile

I would go with the flush as a first step. I've towed 2.5k kgs uphill and downhill and never had the temp gauge over 1/2 way. In fact I contend the Bighorn when working normally seems overcooled...

If you take off both the pipes from the rad - If you can drain the fluid it's worth it if the anti freeze has been changed recently - if not it's worth puting new in.

Put a hose through the top of the rad and flush water through till it come out clear - it will probably be dirty to start with. Then put a hose through the bottom and clean again - and then back through the top - this will loosen anything up in the rad and flush it out.

If you want to go to town and flush the whole engine - take the thermostat out, put the cover back on and wash through in the same way as the rad - using the pipes which you disconnected from the rad initially.

If you take the thermostat out, check that it works properly by placing in a pan of simmering water and you should see it open.  You'll need a new gasket when putting back together (cerial paket cardboard is fine Wink - put the housing on the card, cut around, and then carefully cut out the middle.

You'll find that if you have the interiour heater on hot - when you flush the system it will also clean the interiour heater matrix, and improve the hot air in the cabin.

Make sure that the rad is not also blocked with mud - hose down if it is, just be carful of the fins on the rad they are quite delicate.

All in all, if you flush the rad it will take about 10 mins, if you do everything you'll probably be back on the road in an hour or so.

Hope it cures the problem for you.

Oh when filling back up with water - fill as much as you can from the rad - start the engine and leave the rad cap off, wait for the engine to get up to temperature (just idling with the bonnet up) and keep topping up - this will take about 10 mins, and should mean that you get all of the air out of the system.
