Right - I bought a pre wired twin wiring kit and a relay from Halfords and have wired it all in except for a strange purple wire that is supposed to connect to somewhere in the electrics (I know that sounds vague but haven't got the little bit of paper with "instructions" to hand.

Any idea what it connects to?

It's for fog light cut out switch

http://www.itocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=65368&highlight=#65368

From that post
Pin 1 Yellow for left indicator
Pin 2 Blue for fog lights
Pin 3 White for earth
Pin 4 Green for right indicator
Pin 5 Brown for side light
Pin 6 Red for brake lights
Pin 7 Black for side light
Pin 8 Purple for fog lights

For 12N sockets with a integrated fog lamp cut-out switch, an additional pin is provided which can be used to disable the fog lamp when a trailer is connected.  The following is the standard eight core wiring code which is used in the United Kingdom.  Pin numbers relate to the pins in the socket.

Nice Idea Dylan but that's not it.

My relay doesn't sit in the rear of the car but goes in the engine bay and it specifically mentions something to do with the ignition - I think what it does is detect that the engine is on to stop the battery going flat.

It kind of said that there is no standard for the wiring in cars so you need to know what wire to connect it to (really helpful!)  If I can't sort it will get a smart relay from somewhere like Towsure and swap it out

bit of a long shot, but is it not for a warning buzzer? by law it should be fitted with either a audible or visual warning when you use your indicators. on my frontera its a flashing towball on the dash, on the wifes zafira its a buzzer in the boot.
just a thought!

cheers

Mark

It stops the trailer battery from charging and also the fridge from operating until the vehicle battery has recovered enough charge after being started, so the alternator proritisess charging the car's battery first and then switches everything else on.
