Been running my 3.1 on bio diesel for well over a year, not 100% of the time, probably every other tank full.
Had no problems at all, doesn't start quite so easily  & a bit smoky when cold, fine when warmed up.
Have to drain the fuel filter more often, get quite a thick orange coloured oil out of it!
Also use veggie in it when I can be bothered to load up at the supermarket, or persuade my wife to!
Mix up to about 10% into the bio or normal diesel.

Chucked 1/2 tank of bio in today, at 75p a litre it would be rude not to.

No funnies so far, and she had a good run today.

Mind you the other 1/2 was a mix of diesel & SVO

Hi guys can anyone confirm how they are getting on with veg oil from the supermarkets in their 3.1's ?

I'm running a bighorn 3.1td and am looking to start adding some in due to the distances I travel.

Fine.  Don't go over 50% though, it can start to cause issues with the injector pump.

Thanks for the feedback matey how long have you been running it like that and whats your normal mix ? I think my engine model is the 4jg2 3.1 don't know if this is the same as your own.

Finally before I go out and get some oil to experiment with is there a preferred brand / source (corn etc) of oil you chaps use ?

thanks again  Smile

The best brand is the cheapest you can find, I find the better quality oils are thicker and not as good.

I notice someone got bio for 75p last november, its £1.13 here now  Sad

Don't use anything palm oil based if you can help it, it's a bu66er for waxing. Don't go over 50%, it'll cause issues, don't worry about mr Plod, the government has aloud the use of 2500L of alternative fuels per year per person, and don't worry about the craving for a fried egg sandwich - it's normal.

Keep a spare fuel filter though, veg oil has a large % of glycerol in it (soap) and it'll wash your fuel lines out when you start using it so you'll need to change the filter after a couple of K miles. You'll only need to do this the once though, then back to normal filter change intervals.

Sorry to bump an old one but I'm trying to decide on taking the plunge to bio-diesel (available locally, allegedly, for 86.9p/litre) in the 3.1 and this is the most relevant (and recent) thread I can find..

Are there different types of the 3.1 engine?

Will they all be ok on 100% biodiesel?

While I'm keen to halve the cost of the fuel I'm using, not at the sarifice of my engine. . . coz I can't afford to replace it any time this millenium.

Just thought I would put my 10 pence worth in. Started with 25% veg oil 6 weeks ago, and worked up to 100%. Doesnt like starting at temperatures below 13C on 100%, but once its going its fine. I have now run 450 litres of veg oil through  the engine in those 6 weeks with no probs. Finally got round to changing  the fuelfilter today and it was clean as a whistle. As long as there is a reasonable price difference I will keep using it. I reckon a 25% mix will be OK in winter, with the big diesels I work on, if you let the viscosity increase too much, the higher pressures in the pump knock 'H' out of  the cam followers, and I assume something similar will happen with these pumps although they are a different design. Increased viscosity also gives poor atomisation and the fuel hits the cylinder walls giving a nice cloverleaf wear pattern.
Veg oil per litre at macro today:- 92p, diesel oil £1.32
