My '96 trooper has a rusty chassis and after having a few patches welded on, the guy that done the work advised me to flog the car before the next MOT is due (9 months or so away)  Mad

Me being stubborn, I've cheerfuly ignored his (and a few club members) advice - decided to keep my pride and joy - and bought myself a Mig Welder.

I'm on a very limited budget and when I saw one going cheap on eebuygum last night with 10 mins to go I put in a bid and got it for £53  Laughing
It's a Sureweld Monomig 101 and I've tried finding out what size of reels it takes and what gauge of wire to no avail. I also want to know what the minimum & maximum ampage settings are.
Up till now my email has went unanswered by Sureweld UK themselves.

Has anyone else got the same model of welder? Is it a good 'un?

Just had a quick scoot around, it seems it may be around 80 amps.

This site is quite handy if you've not done any welding.MIG Welding.

One handy tip is get a few lumps/sheets of scrap steel and start practising different welds... over and over until you get it right. Also try welding two plates of steel end to end then stick one end in a vice - give it a belt with a lump hammer and if it breaks your weld needs improving ... if it bends you have cracked it!

The Haynes Mig Welding manual is quite good for beginners.

Laughing unfortunate turn of phrase  Laughing

another point, if it does break, it should be next to the weld, the weld should be the strongest point.

The duty cycle on a smaller machine like this may hold you up a bit, especially on chassis thickness material.

As said practice on the same gauge steel you intend to weld, the reel will be a 9mm gasless at about £7
from most outlets, still not the best for chassis work.

hold the gun at a 45 % angle and the bend in the neck will do the rest, also to find the size wire to use (most common is 0.8) unscrew the outer shiled on the gun and look at the brass tip ,it should have the size stamped on it ok m8 Very Happy

in guessing you have the small white co2 bottles, if you do have, those are utter rubbish and make the weld come out like solder no matter what settings you use.

its best if you use the big bottles and buy a conversion kit, which is about 60 quid and consists of some bits of pipe to connect to the existing gas pipe coming out of the welder and a gas regulator. small gas bottles are about 3ft high and literally last forever and they only cost 20quid Laughing

It's item number 300133375724 on eebuygum if you wanna have a nosey?
It shows the bottle on the bottom picture.

Would a gas bottle from a pub fit onto that?
