|
|
Does anyone know what the CSD relay is for in the fuse box? I figured it stands for "cold start device", but does that mean the glow plugs? I know there's another relay on the other side of the engine bay that is definitely for the glow plugs and having 2 doesn't make much sense. I found something that said some VE injection pumps have a cold start system that advances the timing. Any ideas? _________________ 1991 Bighorn LWB 2.8 TD 4JB1-T |

is it not for the silly butterfly device in the exhaust, the one that always jams, causing lots of problems and everyone dissconnects? |

That's probably right. Probably just uses a relay for the purpose of having the switch on the dash. _________________ 1991 Bighorn LWB 2.8 TD 4JB1-T |

the csd is in the pump on all 2.8 and 3.1 injection pumps it advances the pump internally it is controlled by a temperature sender in the thermostat housing |

Thanks Grandad, that's what I was wondering.
When my engine is cold and at low revs it blows out quite a lot of white smoke. When I rev it up the smoke goes away, which might be due to the rpm timing advance in the pump.
So how can I check if the cold start (timing advance) device is working properly? _________________ 1991 Bighorn LWB 2.8 TD 4JB1-T |

this device only works when the temperature is low when it works there is a noticeably sharper knock to the engine on tickover and this gradually becomes less sharp as the engine temperature rises
this can be tested by starting the engine when warm and then disconnecting the temperature sender on the thermostat housing the engine should then have a sharper tone to it
if i remember right the sender for this is on the right as you look into the engine from the front |

Okay I'll give it a try. So you're saying that the temperature switch is open when its cold? _________________ 1991 Bighorn LWB 2.8 TD 4JB1-T |

Just a quick question re; that silly butterfly valve thingy wotsit!
Can i leave it off if i replace exhaust system? I have disconnected the preheat switch anyway, but i think i'm getting a slight rattle from the exhaust throttle. Manual does say it's an optional part, so does it really need to be there? _________________ If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |

Just curious cos i thought, well if it's not being used and it doesnt need to be there, whats the point in replacing it if the rest of the exhaust goes! (fingers crossed it wont)! _________________ If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem. |

You defintely don't need it. It's a strange solution anyway, but if you lived in Northern Canada you might be glad you got it. There is absolutely no point in replacing it, no, and you could use the illuminated switch for something else! _________________ 1999 Cougar with a NICE motor..
