Hi all, I combine my 4x4 with my hobby which is metal detecting. It's great for getting me out in the fields, especially on a large acreage farm. I have had reasonable success in my hobby finding items and coins from Roman periods up to the present day. Probably my best find was a Medieval Gold Brooch from around the 1500s. This had to be declared and went to the British Museum for recording etc. Eventually the brooch was returned to me and a deal was sealed between myself and the farmer whose land it was found on. I great a great buzz from being out in the fields waiting for that tell tale signal which could be anything from a gold coin to a bottle cap.

That's a cool hobby.

I used to go metal detecting with my grandpop. The metal detector conked out and we never got back to it.

I once was invited to do some metal detecting by a friend... who happens to live in the Aisne region of France, a place that saw 90% of its villages and towns destroyed by the First World War. He sometimes finds fascinating stuff like Roman coins or medieval brooches, but I felt a bit uneasy when I saw how nonchalantly he could say "oh, that's another WW1 unexploded shell, I'll call the gendarmerie later". It does sound like it's an interesting hobby, but if I were to pick it up, I'd do it elsewhere...
By the way, the situation with unexploded ordnance has gotten better over the last decades. The farmers in the region, including his grandfather, were given surplus explosives in the 60s so that they could deal with shells and bombs themselves instead of bothering the police/gendarmes with such trivial issues  Shocked
