Hi all
Every now and then 'old thirsty' seems to shudder like a shudderer upon start up. When cold she starts within 3 seconds raring to go but when warm she occasionally starts up like the African Queen! The starter seems a bit sluggish and the whole truck starts vibrating, the gearstick swings from side to side and even when I lift the bonnet the engine block seems to be getting ready to lay an egg! I can still set off and after a minute or two everything goes back to normal. However, I'd still like to find out what's going on. MOT next month and I really could do without this happening when the tester does his bit. I've been going through all the threads but still draw a blank.
On another note, took my son out for a bit of a greenlaning sesh two weeks ago. Fair enough I didn't goe as far as Mr Twister and his posse but as a first timer it was awesome! Luckily I'm posted to a camp with 9500 acres of woodland to play in. Started in a fairly conspicuous place, got totally lost and ended up camping at Kielder Water for the night (the camping was planned, just didn't know where)! Thank god for logging tracks!!
Your help is appreciated,
Ben |

Running as lumpy as that, possible one of the banks isn't firing when starting from warm?
Do you have a spark plug tester? Might be worth puttling on the plugs when warm to check there's no issues (may be the leads tracking??? although that's normally with a cold engine). _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

Hi DX
Hopefully it shouldn't have anything to do with the plugs or HT Leads as they were changed when I had my rocker cover gasket renewed. Mind you, you never know, the expletives didn't even fill the oil back up afterwards! As I don't have a tester, is it cheaper to bite the bullet and go for a new set of plugs?
Many thanks,
Ben |

Try taking a plug out, put the lead back on, and rest the plug (securly) against a metal part of the engine block, start the engine (DON'T TOUCH THE LEAD OR PLUG) and see if there is a spark jumping over the plug gap.
A plug tester is only about £3 - £4 from a motor factors, it's the starting fine when cold which is puzzling me - normally an electrical issue is amplified by a cold engine rather than a hot... One on the petrol owners should be on here pretty soon though. _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

Thanks for the advice. I'll get to it when it finally stops raining (if ever). Just to reiterate, every cold start is on the button, although slightly tappetty now and then (I can live with that for a 1992 motor)!
Regards,

poss causes
1 ht lead brake down
2 spark plug brake down
3 loose ht lead
4 loose spark plug
to solve this
start by loosing the ht leads so they can b pulled out useing a thick cloth and for u not to b touching the engine then start her up,
start pulling the leads out 1 by 1 starting with no 1 its on the right hand bank as u look in to the engine bay <drivers side > the to 2 < opposite bank > and so on but MAKE SURE U PUT BACK LEAD AFTER B4 PULLING NXT LEAD wot u are doing is listening for a change in revs or engine bhavour if or when u reach a lead and there is no change in sound check plug and lead that could b the culprite _________________

The plugs may be running to hot, you could try colder plugs _________________ |
